Aadhaar is a 12 digit identity number issued by UIDAI to every resident of India. New enrolment is free for all ages, including Baal Aadhaar for children below 5.

Documents to keep ready
- Proof of identity, e.g. passport, PAN, voter ID or ration card with photo
- Proof of address, e.g. bank passbook, electricity bill or ration card
- Proof of date of birth, e.g. birth certificate or Class 10 certificate
- For children: birth certificate and a parent's Aadhaar
- Original documents only, the centre scans and returns them
How to apply
- Find an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, bank or post office enrolment centre
- Book an appointment online (optional) or walk in
- Fill the enrolment form at the centre
- Show original documents and give photo, fingerprints and iris scan
- Collect the acknowledgement slip with the Enrolment ID (EID)
- Track status and download e-Aadhaar on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
Good to know
- Enrolment is free. Do not pay anyone at the centre for a new Aadhaar
- Children below 5 get Baal Aadhaar with only a photo, no fingerprints
- Keep the EID slip safe, you need it to check status
- Adults (18+) applying for the first time may face extra verification and a longer wait
